Concrete on the West Shore Riverfront
Wormleysburg is one of the smallest boroughs on the West Shore, and concrete contractors here work in tight quarters with the Susquehanna close by. The borough covers about 0.79 square miles on the west bank of the river, directly across from Harrisburg, at an elevation of 338 feet. It had 3,043 residents and 1,538 housing units in 2020. Homes range from older houses near the river to later neighborhoods on the higher ground, which keeps the work varied: driveways, steps, walks and backyard patios.
Named for John Wormley
Wormleysburg was settled in 1772 and takes its name from John Wormley, its founding settler. The John Wormley House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The borough separated from East Pennsboro Township and incorporated in May 1916. Its population peaked at 3,192 in 1970, dropped to 2,607 in 2000 and rebounded to 3,070 by 2010, so newer homes and remodels sit alongside older ones.
Near the river
Living across from the capital means living next to the Susquehanna. The river at Harrisburg has a 17-foot flood stage and has topped it many times, including 33.27 feet during Hurricane Agnes on June 24, 1972, and 25.17 feet on September 9, 2011. For homes on low ground near the river, we talk about elevation, drainage and how a new slab would behave if water came up. A patio or walk that has been under water often needs its base rebuilt, not just new concrete on top.
Slopes behind the river
Away from the riverfront, the ground rises, and many lots have a grade change between the street and the house. That brings:
- Steps and landings that need careful layout for a comfortable climb
- Driveways with pitch that need a textured finish for winter traction
- Runoff from uphill yards that has to be routed around slabs
- Patios that may need a step down or a short curb at the low edge
We walk the site with you and look at where water goes in a heavy rain before we design anything.
Small borough, careful work
With 1,426 households in less than a square mile, neighbors are close. We protect adjoining property during tear-out, keep the street clear when we can, and clean up thoroughly. Exterior pours use an air-entrained mix, a compacted base and proper joints, and we leave you with cure and sealing instructions.
Matching old and new
Many Wormleysburg homes have concrete from several eras on one lot. When we replace one piece, such as the front steps, we match the color and texture to the walk that stays as closely as concrete allows, and we line up joints so the new work reads as part of the same design. If a full refresh makes more sense, we will say so and explain why.

Wormleysburg Questions
My patio flooded in a storm. Does it need to be replaced?
Not always. If it settled or cracked, the base likely washed out and replacement makes sense. If it is still level and sound, cleaning and sealing may be enough. We check on site.
Can you build steps up a steep front yard?
Yes. We lay out the risers and landings to fit the slope and make the climb comfortable and safe.
Is Wormleysburg part of East Pennsboro Township?
No. It has been its own borough since 1916, so borough rules apply.
