Concrete for New and Newer Homes
Upper Allen Township grew faster than most of the West Shore over the last decade, and many of the calls concrete contractors get here are from owners of newer homes. The township counted 23,183 residents in 2020, up from 18,059 in 2010, a gain of about 28 percent. It covers 13.3 square miles south of Mechanicsburg, with the Yellow Breeches Creek forming its southern border and the York County line. New streets mean new patios, wider driveways, walks to the back yard and slabs for sheds, along with the first round of repairs on homes from the 1990s and 2000s.
Communities inside the township
Upper Allen lists nine unincorporated communities, including Shepherdstown, Grantham and Bowmansdale. Grantham is home to Messiah University, whose campus is counted as its own census place. Shepherdstown and Bowmansdale are older crossroads settlements that now sit among newer subdivisions. Many residents use a Mechanicsburg mailing address, but Upper Allen Township handles permits for lots inside its boundaries.
The Yellow Breeches and drainage
The Yellow Breeches is a well-known trout stream, but it also floods. The National Weather Service gauge on Yellow Breeches Creek near Camp Hill, downstream, has a 7-foot flood stage. Its highest crest, 18.77 feet, came from the remnants of Hurricane Eloise in September 1975, and Hurricane Agnes brought 18.33 feet in June 1972. Lots that slope toward the creek or toward storm drainage swales need careful grading, so water moves across the yard and off the property instead of under a new slab.
What newer homes usually need
Owners in newer subdivisions most often ask for:
- A first patio off a slider or deck stairs, sized for a table and grill
- Stamped concrete in slate, flagstone or wood plank patterns with color
- Driveway widening for a third car or a trailer pad
- Walks from the driveway to the back yard
- Shed and hot tub pads with the right thickness for the load
Fill around a newer foundation can still be settling. We remove soft material near the house, compact a proper base and pitch the patio away from the wall.
HOA guidelines
Many Upper Allen neighborhoods have homeowners associations that limit stamped colors, patio placement or driveway width. Bring your HOA rules to the estimate or send them ahead, and we will design within them and give you a drawing to submit if your association asks for one.
Growing families, growing yards
Many Upper Allen buyers move in with a bare back yard and a list of plans. A good order is drainage first, then the patio, then walks and pads around it, so each piece fits the next. We can lay out a full plan now and pour in phases, leaving joints and grades set up for future additions.
