Concrete for an Old River Borough
Middletown is about 10 miles southeast of Harrisburg, and it gives concrete contractors a mix of old borough streets and water on two sides. It was settled in 1755 and incorporated in 1828, and Wikipedia calls it the oldest incorporated community in Dauphin County. The borough covers about 2.08 square miles with 9,533 residents in 2020, below its 1960 peak of 11,182. With most homes built long ago, the work here is mostly replacing walks, steps, driveways and garage floors that have seen many winters.
Bounded by water
The Susquehanna River forms Middletown's southern border and Swatara Creek its eastern border. The borough sits at about 360 feet. Swatara Creek has a long flood history: the National Weather Service gauge near Hershey, upstream, crested at 27.22 feet in September 2011, and the river itself reached 33.27 feet at Harrisburg during Agnes in 1972. Homes on low ground near either water need concrete planned for drainage. We grade slabs to shed water away from foundations and avoid sending runoff into basements or onto a neighbor's lot.
Older homes, tight spaces
The 2000 census counted 4,387 housing units at more than 2,100 per square mile, so lots are close together. Older homes have front steps at the walk, alleys behind, and detached garages or parking pads. Six Middletown properties are on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Simon Cameron House and Bank and the Swatara Ferry House.
Typical requests in the borough:
- Rebuilding front steps and stoops that have settled or crumbled
- Replacing sidewalk sections lifted by roots or frost
- New rear parking pads off the alley
- Garage floor replacement
- Small backyard patios
Nearby landmarks
Three Mile Island sits about 3 miles south of the borough, and its Unit 2 reactor had a partial meltdown in 1979, when about 140,000 people left the area within days. Middletown also sits at the western edge of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, near a low pass through the ridge-and-valley mountains. Neither changes how concrete is poured, but they are part of why many families have deep roots here and want work done right on homes they plan to keep.
How we approach the work
Alley access and on-street parking shape most Middletown jobs. We plan delivery, staging and cleanup around them and protect neighboring walls and steps when breaking out old concrete. Exterior work uses an air-entrained mix with joints cut at the right spacing. Where new concrete meets an old foundation or brick, we place an isolation joint so each can move on its own.
Owners and landlords
Middletown has a mix of long-time owners and rental properties, and both need concrete that stays safe and looks cared for. For rental owners, we can scope repairs to fix trip hazards and failing steps first, then plan larger work around tenant schedules. For owner-occupied homes, we are glad to talk through a full refresh of walks, steps and the driveway at once.

Middletown Questions
Can you work from the alley behind my house?
Yes. Many Middletown jobs are staged from the alley. We plan concrete delivery and equipment so neighbors can still get through.
My front steps are pulling away from the house. Can they be saved?
Sometimes. If the steps are sound but have settled, other options may work. If they are cracked or crumbling, replacement on a proper base is usually better.
Does the borough have rules for sidewalk replacement?
Work in the public walk or at the curb can involve borough requirements. We check what applies before we schedule.
