Concrete for an Early 1900s Borough

Lemoyne sits on the west bank of the Susquehanna directly across from Harrisburg, and much of what concrete contractors see here dates to the borough's first growth spurt. Lemoyne had 1,393 residents in 1910 and 4,171 by 1930, so many of its streets filled in during those two decades. The 2020 census counted 4,659 people and 2,331 housing units on 1.612 square miles, all land. That is a lot of older homes in a small space, with walks, stoops, driveways and garage floors that have seen close to a century of weather.

Three names, one town

The area's history runs deep. A stone house built in 1724 by John Harris and John Kelso came before any settlement, and Thomas Penn named the land the Manor of Lowther in 1750. The town became Bridgeport after the camelback bridge across the river was completed in 1815, was renamed Riverton in 1888, and took the name Lemoyne when it incorporated on May 23, 1905. Homes from that period tend to have raised porches, front steps right at the sidewalk and narrow lots with rear garages.

What older Lemoyne homes need

  • Porch steps and stoops rebuilt where they have settled or crumbled
  • Front walks replaced section by section where roots or frost have lifted them
  • Rear garage floors that have cracked into pieces
  • Driveway strips and parking pads off alleys
  • Small patios in compact back yards

On these jobs we break out only what has failed and match the finish and joint layout of what stays. Where concrete meets brick or a stone foundation, we place an isolation joint so the two can move separately.

Drainage on a hillside river town

Lemoyne sits at about 384 feet, with ground rising from the river. On sloped lots, runoff from uphill neighbors and roofs can collect behind steps and under walks. We look at where water comes from, set slopes so it runs off each surface, and recommend extending downspouts that empty onto concrete. These small fixes add years to a new slab.

Households and home sizes

About 40 percent of Lemoyne's 2,178 households were single-person households in 2020, and the median age was 40.5. Many projects here are modest in size, a set of steps or a few walk sections, and we are happy to take them on. Small jobs still get the same base work, air-entrained mix and proper cure as a full driveway.

Right across from the capital

Lemoyne's spot on the west bank, at the foot of the bridges into Harrisburg, means many residents commute across the river and want work finished on a predictable schedule. We give you a pour date, tell you how long to stay off the new concrete, and plan so you can still get in and out of the house. For steps at the only entrance, we can phase the job or set a temporary path so you are never stuck.

Lemoyne Questions

Do you take small jobs like a single set of steps?

Yes. Many Lemoyne projects are small, and they get the same base prep, mix and finishing as larger work.

Why do my porch steps hold water?

Older steps were often poured flat or have settled backward. New steps get a slight pitch on each tread so water runs off.

Can you work from an alley to replace a garage floor?

Yes. We plan delivery and staging around alley access and keep it as open as possible for neighbors.
