From the Village Square to Blue Mountain

Linglestown is one of the oldest communities near Harrisburg, and the concrete contractors who work here split their time between a historic village center and newer homes climbing toward Blue Mountain. Thomas Lingle laid out the village in 1765 as a 90-plot community, first calling it "The Town of St. Thomas." Today Linglestown is a census-designated place in Lower Paxton Township with 6,539 residents in 2020, covering 3.83 square miles. The village sits around 540 feet, and the high point, 995 feet, is on the south slope of Blue Mountain.

The village center

The oldest homes line the streets around the square, where Pennsylvania Route 39 runs through town. The square itself was redesigned under the Linglestown Plan, first proposed in March 2000, approved in modified form in February 2007, with the construction bid awarded in September 2009. Homes in the village often have walks and steps right at the street, narrow side driveways and detached garages. We keep new concrete simple and in scale with these houses, and we take care where a new step meets old stone or brick.

Hillside lots

North of the village, the land rises toward Blue Mountain, and many newer homes sit on sloped lots. Slopes are where concrete jobs go wrong if they are rushed.

  • A driveway that climbs to the garage needs a textured finish for grip in winter.
  • Runoff from uphill has to be caught or diverted before it reaches the slab.
  • Patios on a slope may need a short retaining edge or steps down to the yard.
  • The base has to sit on firm, undisturbed ground, not loose fill.

We walk the lot with you, watch where water runs, and set the grade before we talk finishes.

Township rules apply

Linglestown has no borough government of its own. Permits and right-of-way questions go through Lower Paxton Township, and many homes use a Harrisburg mailing address. The Linglestown Fire Company, established in 1934, covers the northern part of the township. We confirm the requirements for your address before scheduling.

Projects we handle here

  • Driveway replacement and widening, including sloped drives
  • Backyard patios, plain or stamped, sometimes with steps down to the lawn
  • Front walks and steps for village homes and newer entries
  • Garage and shed slabs for detached outbuildings
  • Repairs for sunken, cracked or scaled sections

Route 39 links Linglestown to Interstate 81 about 3.5 miles east and to Routes 22 and 322 about 5 miles west, so we reach the village easily from anywhere in the area.

Older village, newer edges

The 90 original lots around the square are only a small part of today's Linglestown. Over the years the village grew outward, and newer subdivisions now fill much of the land between the square and the mountain. That gives the community a wide range of house ages within a short drive, and we adjust each plan to fit: a narrow, careful stoop replacement on Main Street one day, and a wide stamped patio on a hillside lot the next.

Linglestown Questions

Can you pour a driveway on a steep lot near Blue Mountain?

Yes. We use a textured broom finish for traction, tighter joint spacing and a plan to move uphill runoff away from the slab and garage.

Who approves concrete work in Linglestown?

Lower Paxton Township. Linglestown is part of the township, so its permit process applies.

Will new steps look out of place on an older village house?

They should not. We match the footprint and choose a plain finish and edge that suit the house and the street.
