Concrete in a Railroad Town
Enola grew up around a rail yard, and concrete contractors here work on homes from that early 1900s boom as well as newer houses on the hills. Enola is a census-designated place in East Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, with 6,103 residents in 2020 on about 1.62 square miles. It sits on the west shore of the Susquehanna facing Harrisburg, and US Routes 11 and 15 run north to south through town. Permits and local rules come from East Pennsboro Township, since Enola has no borough government of its own.
Built for the yard
The town is named for the daughter of Wesley Miller, one of two farmers who sold land to the Pennsylvania Railroad for a flag station. In the fall of 1902 the railroad decided to build a classification yard there, and the Enola Yard officially opened in January 1905. It was described then as the largest freight yard in the world. Land companies bought hundreds of acres, and starting in 1909 the Realty Company built more than 220 homes to rent or sell to families working at the yard.
Those early homes are now well over a century old. Their concrete has usually been replaced at least once, and the second or third round tends to be due: front steps that have dropped, walks broken by frost, narrow drives and old garage floors.
Higher ground and slopes
Enola sits at about 450 feet, above the river, and many streets climb. On sloped lots we pay attention to:
- Traction on driveways and walks, with a firm broom finish
- Runoff from uphill yards and roofs, diverted away from slabs
- Step layout so long climbs to the front door are comfortable
- Base set on firm ground rather than loose fill
Hillside driveways that crack at the bottom often have water running under them. We fix the water path when we replace the slab.
Families and schools
East Pennsboro Area School District serves Enola with four schools and about 2,900 students, and many homeowners here are families who need a usable back yard. Patios, walks to the play area and pads for sheds or basketball hoops are common requests, along with driveway widening for a second or third car.
How the work goes
We start with a site visit, measure, look at drainage and talk through the finish. The written estimate lists thickness, base work, reinforcement, finish and any township permit step. On pour day we form, place an air-entrained mix, finish, cut joints and leave you with cure and sealing instructions.
Second and third generation concrete
On a house built for a rail yard family more than a century ago, the concrete you see today is rarely the original. Walks may have been replaced in the 1950s, a driveway added in the 1970s and steps patched since. Each piece ages differently. We look at them one at a time, tell you which are sound and which are failing, and give you options to replace everything at once or in stages that make sense for your budget and timeline.

Enola Questions
Who issues permits for concrete work in Enola?
East Pennsboro Township. Enola is a community inside the township, so its rules apply.
My driveway cracks at the bottom of the hill every few years. Why?
Water running under the slab often washes out the base at the low end. We rebuild the base and direct runoff away when we replace it.
Can you pour a basketball pad in the back yard?
Yes. We size it, set the grade so it drains and can set a sleeve for a hoop post if you want one.
